From a Michigan Morning to Your Cup: The Perk-Up Story

Hi, I'm Eric Williams — founder, head roaster, and the person who probably thinks about coffee more than is entirely healthy. Perk-Up Coffee Inc. was born right here in Grand Ledge, Michigan in 2022, and every single bag we ship carries a little piece of this place and a whole lot of passion.

Why Coffee? Why This?

It started the way most great things do — with a really bad cup of coffee. After years of settling for stale, over-roasted beans from big-box stores, I decided enough was enough. I wanted to understand what coffee could actually taste like when it was treated with care from the moment it was harvested to the moment it hit the cup. What began as a weekend obsession with a small home roaster quickly became something I couldn't ignore. The complexity, the craft, the connection to farmers halfway around the world — I was hooked.

I started Perk-Up because I believed that people in Michigan — and everywhere — deserved access to truly fresh, thoughtfully sourced coffee without having to pay a premium for pretension. Great coffee should feel like a warm conversation, not a lecture.

How We Source Our Beans

Every coffee we carry starts with a relationship. We work directly with farms and trusted importers who share our commitment to quality and ethical practices. Our single-origin offerings take you on a journey across the coffee-growing world — from the bright, citrus-forward highlands of Costa Rica and the floral, wine-like complexity of Ethiopia, to the smooth, nutty profiles of Brazil and the earthy, chocolate-rich beans of Mexico. And yes, we're proud to carry some of the rarest and most celebrated coffees on the planet — from Jamaica and Hawaii.

When we select a bean, we're asking: Does this coffee tell a story? Does it reflect the soil, the altitude, the hands that picked it? If the answer is yes, it earns a place in our lineup.

Our Roasting Philosophy: Fresh Is Everything

Here's something we feel strongly about: coffee is a perishable product, and freshness matters more than almost anything else. That's why we roast to order and ship the same day. When your bag arrives, those beans were roasted within hours — not weeks or months ago sitting in a warehouse somewhere.

We roast in small batches right here in Michigan, dialing in each profile to honor what makes that particular bean special. A delicate Ethiopian natural deserves a lighter touch. A bold Brazilian blend can handle more development. We don't apply a one-size-fits-all approach, because coffee isn't one-size-fits-all.

Rooted in Michigan

Grand Ledge is a small city with a big heart, and Perk-Up is proud to be part of this community. We're not a faceless corporation — we're your neighbors. When you support Perk-Up, you're supporting a local Michigan business that cares deeply about doing things right: for the farmers who grow our beans, for the environment, and for the people who drink our coffee every morning.

We believe in sustainability not as a marketing buzzword, but as a responsibility. We're constantly working to reduce our footprint, support farms that treat their workers and land with respect, and build a business that we're proud to pass on.
